Dr Marelize Immelman completed her undergraduate training at the University of Pretoria, where she also obtained her BSc. Hons degree in Genetics. She subsequently moved to UCT, where she completed her Masters’ and PhD theses in pharmacogenomics, supervised by Professor Collet Dandara. Dr Immelman was a Vera Bradley Foundation Scholar at Indiana University in the USA between 2016 - 2018 and has authored 20 peer-reviewed publications. She is an HPCSA-registered Medical Biological Scientist, currently working at the National Health Laboratory Service Human Genetics Laboratory at Groote Schuur Hospital. Her main responsibility is the constitutional microarray diagnostic service for identification, characterisation and reporting of genomic copy number variants and regions of homozygosity in paediatric patients with developmental delay/intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder and congenital anomalies.
