Professor Dandara is the chair for the African Pharmacogenomics Network. He is globally respected leader in human genetics and pharmacogenomics, currently serving as Head of the Division of Human Genetics here at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, a position he assumed in January 2025. In this role, he leads cutting-edge research, teaching, and clinical genetics initiatives, overseeing a division that pushes the boundaries of genomic science with real clinical impact across Africa.
Professor Dandara is also the Principal Investigator of the Pharmacogenomics and Drug Metabolism Research Group at UCT, where his work has been pivotal in characterising genetic variation in African genomes and its influence on drug response, with strong relevance for precision medicine, including infectious diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and also the pharmacogenomics of traditional and herbal medicines. He is widely recognised as one of Africa’s leading pharmacogenomics experts, with a C2 NRF rating, an extensive publication record (Google Scholar h-index ~47) and a strong presence in international scientific leadership.
